Wheelchair Caster Wheels

Often overlooked, wheelchair caster wheels are the small wheels on the front of a wheelchair that can swivel in any direction, which makes it much easier to maneuver. Wheelchair casters are connected to the chair itself with caster housings.

To find the right caster wheel, start by selecting the correct size needed for your wheelchair. Caster wheels can range in size from 2.75 - 10 inches. Once you have selected the correct size, you’ll likely have a few options to choose from. Though most casters come in black or gray, some sizes will have some other color options to choose from. Some casters can light up to add some flash to the caster wheels.

Not just color options, there may be pneumatic or semi-pneumatic caster options available. These offer a smoother ride and greater shock absorption on rough surfaces, but they can go flat and require maintenance. Most casters tend to be solid which are more efficient and won’t ever go flat, but don’t offer as smooth a ride.

Regardless of the wheelchair caster wheel, they should be inspected on a regular basis. Check for cracks or damage and any visible wear and tear. Spin the wheel within the caster housing and check it moves without impediment. If you see an issue, it may be time to consider a replacement.
